What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a gentle, non-invasive way for people to understand themselves and make positive long-term changes at the subconscious level.

Hypnotherapy is therapy done under hypnosis; it is a highly effective and efficient way to make positive changes because it works with the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is the deeper part of the mind, which holds our beliefs, habits, patterns of behaviour and memories that drive our behaviours. Most of our behaviours are done automatically at the subconscious level, meaning that we don’t consciously think about them before doing them. For example have you ever driven your car from A to B and when you’ve gotten to B thought to yourself, “I don’t remember driving here?” That is because once driving is learned and repeated it becomes an automatic process that is stored at the subconscious level. So your subconscious is actually doing the driving.

What does Hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we go in and out of regularly throughout the day. When you are absorbed and focused in a task e.g., reading a book or watching television you are in a trance state just like hypnosis. When you are falling asleep your level of consciousness starts to drop and the mind and body feel more relaxed, this is the same state of consciousness attained during hypnosis. You are not asleep during hypnosis, and you will remember most of what has been said. Hypnosis can be reached by relaxing the body and focusing your attention, this is done with specific imagery and relaxation techniques, which the therapist guides you through. You may feel deeply relaxed or you may feel like your just lying/sitting there (there is no right or wrong thing to feel). All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, you are 100% in control, and you cannot be made to do or say anything you do not want to. Most people find the experience very relaxing and enjoyable and want more!

What do I need for online hypnotherapy?

  • A good wifi connection (must be able to stream tv shows, Netflix without any issues)
  • computer, tablet or phone with a camera and a microphone (most have these in built)
  • Zoom (video conferencing software or app, its free and easy to set up)

Is online therapy suitable for everyone?

Online therapy is not suitable for anyone in a crisis situation e.g. suicidal or having psychotic symptoms. Please call your local suicide hotline, crisis assessment team (CAT) at your local hospital, or emergency services (000 in Australia).

Can you be hypnotised over Skype?

Yes, it is no different than doing it in person, all you need is your mind and my voice.
